The Problem We Solve

In the field, hearing is not enough.

In dense ecosystems — tropical forests, wetlands, and wildlife corridors — identifying the exact location and elevation of a biological sound (a frog call, a bird species, a primate) using human observation alone is extremely difficult and time-consuming.

SonicWild changes that. It is a Windows desktop application that connects to a network of custom acoustic sensor nodes deployed across a research site. Using on-device spatial audio processing, it triangulates incoming sound sources and renders them live as directional rays on a 2D map, as a 3D hemisphere showing azimuth and elevation, and as a real-time spectrogram displaying frequency signatures.

Researchers gain a complete, spatially-accurate acoustic picture of their environment — in real time, and operable entirely offline in remote field conditions.

Live Acoustic Monitoring

Visualize real-time acoustic events as they happen. Sound sources are rendered as directional rays on an interactive map — Blue Rays (Tracks) for stable, confirmed sound sources, and Red Rays (Pots) for short-lived potential detections.

3D Sound Hemisphere

For each sensor node, open a full 3D hemisphere viewer showing the azimuth (0°–360°) and elevation (0°–90°) of incoming sounds in real time. Understand not just the direction, but the height at which a sound originates.

Real-Time Spectrogram

A live, high-performance frequency-vs-time spectrogram (0–20 kHz) streams directly from any connected sensor node. Identify species calls, noise events, and acoustic patterns as they unfold.

Multi-Sensor Triangulation

SonicWild fuses spatial directional data from multiple sensor nodes to compute a single, unified 3D source position — overlaid on the live map in real time.

Online & Offline Maps

Choose between live Google Maps satellite imagery for online environments, or Leaflet offline tile maps for remote areas with no connectivity. Offline map tiles are downloaded and cached within the application itself.

Remote Device Management

Discover sensor nodes automatically on the local network, read their live status, push configuration updates, and start or stop recordings — all over SSH, directly from the SonicWild interface.

Projects & Deployments

Organize every field deployment into a named Project. Store base camp GPS coordinates, position microphone nodes visually on the map, and persist all settings in a portable local database.

Recordings Archive

Browse .raw and .wav audio files stored on connected sensor nodes. Stream for in-app playback or download them locally — synchronized with full spectrogram and 3D visualization.

Guided Session Setup

Two built-in setup wizards for the field: a 4-step Live Session Wizard (site coverage → node placement → recording config → launch) and a 3-step Passive Session Wizard (grid setup → schedule → deploy).

Live Audio Streaming

Stream real-time audio — mono or 4-channel — from any connected sensor node directly to your desktop for immediate acoustic assessment during a live session.

Deploy Your Sensor Network

Place Chatak sensor nodes across your research site. Each node is a self-contained acoustic sensor that captures and processes sound locally. Connect them to a shared local WiFi network.

Connect & Configure

Launch SonicWild on your Windows laptop. The application automatically discovers all sensor nodes on the network. Set your GPS reference point, position nodes on the map, and configure your session in minutes using the guided setup wizard.

Watch acoustic events appear live on the map as directional rays. Observe their 3D spatial position in the hemisphere viewer. Read frequency signatures on the spectrogram — all simultaneously, all in real time.

The Sensor

The Chatak Node

The acoustic sensor at the heart of every SonicWild deployment.

Each SonicWild deployment is powered by Chatak Nodes — compact, field-ready acoustic sensor units built on the Raspberry Pi platform. Each node is equipped with a 4-channel microphone array and runs ODAS (Open embeddeD Audition System), an open-source spatial audio processing engine.

Chatak nodes perform all spatial audio computation on-device — beamforming, source separation, and directional localization — and stream the processed results to the SonicWild desktop application in real time over the local network.
